Water Meter Reading

The Water Department utilizes an electronic communications register (ECR), which is an outside reading device to conveniently read water meters, without the need to interrupt residents or enter their homes.

Water MeterThe outside reading device is a small black rectangular or oval box that is attached to a certain location on the exterior of the building. Usually the ECR is located on the same side of the house as the inside water meter. The ECR is electronically connected by a wire to the inside water meter. Meter Reading Device

A special reading gun is used by the meter readers to read the inside meter, without the need to enter the home/business. Having the ECR accessible at all times to meter reading personnel is vital. This allows the water department to bill you based on an actual reading, not an estimated reading. Village code 16.09 states: Meters shall be so located that they will be easily accessible for reading and inspection, installation, and exchange. This means that there cannot be any overgrown shrubs, or bushes obstructing the reading device. There cannot be a dog, or another hazard near the outside reading device preventing the meter reading personnel from obtaining a reading from the device.

The next time you're working in the yard, take a few minutes and check out the area around your outside reading device (ECR).Meter on House

  • Is it easily seen from the street?
  • Do you have to push shrubs or tree limbs out of the way to get to it?
  • Do you have to duck down or crawl to read it?
