How to get started in the Fire Service
The basic layout to the organization of the fire service is broken into EMS (Emergency Medical Service) and The Fire Service. A good way to get your foot in the door to a fire department is to obtain the two basic levels of certifications, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and Firefighter I. Jackson Fire Department employment opportunities offer a sponsorship for the first levels of education to members of our team.
JFD Recruit Academy
In your first 7 weeks as a member of the Jackson Fire Department, during each Monday night training, you will have a specific class getting you accustomed to the procedures of the JFD. In this recruit academy class, you will also be trained and certified to drive some apparatuses including our 1250 and 1251 ambulances.
JFD Continuing Education
Jackson Fire Department members are encouraged to continue their education beyond the first levels as stated above. Some of these certifications and licenses include Advanced EMT and Paramedic on the EMS side, and Fire II and MPO (Motor Pump Operator) on the Fire side. JFD members often times are in the same classes and are able to drive to class together, as well as study together.
JFD In-House Training
Jackson Fire Department members pride themselves on their continuous training. JFD hosts a training night every Monday night from 6:30-9. These trainings are split week to week between EMS, Fire, Officers, and if there are four Mondays in that month, an additional EMS training.
